State Forest State Park Bockman Overview
State Forest State Park Bockman campground is one mile north of the North Michigan Reservoir and has 52 total campsites nestled in the Roosevelt National Forest. The campsites are quite large and can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (up to 114 feet). There is also one group site (#345) that is designed to accommodate up to 6 tents. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grate.
Amenities include an amphitheater, dump station, flush toilets, drinking drinking water and a horse corral for those of you camping with your horses. You’ll also find a playground and picnic area nearby.
Bockman campground takes reservations from mid May to late September. Non-reserved sites are available on a first come/first serve basis during the summer and winter (weather permitting). Campers should contact the park for current conditions and campground closures.
Other campgrounds/loops in the park include Crags, Mendenhall, North Michigan, North Park and Ranger Lakes.
Area Recreation & Activities
On the water visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Other outdoor activities in the area include backpacking, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, horseback riding, hunting and wildlife viewing. Visitors can also enjoy ice fishing, snow shoeing, snow sledding and snowmobiling during the winter months.
The ultimate in rugged Colorado, State Forest State Park offers visitors 71,000 acres of forest, jagged peaks, alpine lakes, wildlife and miles of trails. The park stretches along the west side of the Medicine Bow Mountains and into the north end of the Never Summer Range.

Are generators allowed at Bockman campgroud
Hi Phyllis,
Generators are allowed at Bockman Campground (State Forest State Park) from 10AM to 10PM.
This statement is confusing, “Bockman campground does take reservations from mid May to late September, but non-reserved sites are available on a first come/first serve basis during the summer and winter….”.
I understand the off-peak month’s are available to first come-first served, but where are the non-reserved site’s located during the summer? Thanks!!! Roger

Thanks for your comment! I’ll try and clarify in the overview. Basically though – if a reservable campsite is not reserved, then the campground will allow someone to showing up without a reservation to stay at the site.
In the Amenities, it says that there are showers at Bockman. I’ve been through that campground several times and never seen any showers. Where are they located?
I am very curious, who was the namesake for this campground? My understanding is Bockman is a misspelling of Bachmann, and I have never encountered another Bockman (with the exception of relatives).
I saw a sign for this campground one time driving through CO and it had puzzled me endlessly ever since—as far as I knew we were all confined to the eastern midwest. Thanks in advance for your help!

Here is a little history about how Bockman campground was named:
Colorado State Forest was established in 1938. The 71,000-acre state park is part of 4.5 million acres of state trust land granted to Colorado when it became a state in 1876. Uses for the park include grazing, logging and recreation. Bockman Campground took its name from Bockman Lumber Camp, where more than 100 lumber workers and their families lived in the 1950s and 1960s.

Yes, Bockman campground was in the burn area of the Cameron Peak Fire, but the campground will open the end of May.
